CONTRARY VISIONS

Carolyn Kreiter-Kurylo

14

Preface by Peter Klappert

"It is in a Blakean sense of Contraries that Carolyn Kreiter-Kurylo titles her first book

Contrary Visions... The people in a number of these poems are deaf or blind or infirm, but the poet knows the world is no less various and intense when the eye is lightless or the ear mute, and she intuits how the senses may complement and supplement each other... Kreiter-Kurylo's poems proclaim the beauty and abundance of this worldof memory, history, art and music, of outcasts and exemplars and the fragile, natural economies they inhabitand as they do so, quietly they celebrate themselves. They are their own best source of wonder...."Peter Klappert, George Mason University. Award Winner, Yale Series of Younger Poets. "The concern in these poems with the visual, with how artists see, is obvious and praiseworthy, but what strikes me even more forcefully is the variety of tones and sound effects that are available to this poet, whose ear is as keen as her eye. There is plenty of intelligent pleasure in this collection."

RECONQUISTA Y LITERATURA MEDIEVAL

Giorgio Perissinotto

This study is a novel approach and significant contribution to the always challenging relationship between historical events and their representation in literature. ). By submitting the literature to a close textual analysis, he is able to validate the thematic value of the Reconquest in Medieval Spanish literature.

THE LEGEND OF BERNARDO DEL CARPI0: FROM CHRONICLE TO DRAMA

David G. Burton

Preface by John Lihani

Comedia de la libertad de Espaa por Bernardo del Carpio,

a play written in 1579 by Juan de la Cueva, is based upon events in the life of the legendary hero of the Spanish Middle Ages. Professor Burton demonstrates in this first complete study of the play that Cueva goes beyond the mere presentation of Bernardo del Carpio and his victory over Charlemagne and the French army at Roncesvalles. The study is important in the criticism of the early Spanish Theater because it shows that Cueva imbued his play with many levels of meaning, as the exultation of a national hero, as a political allegory of Philip lI's attempt to add Portugal to the Spanish crown, as a triumph of virtue over vice, and, at its heart, as a statement of faith in which forgiveness and the promise of redemption follow sin and repentance. "Burton deserves thanks for his interesting analysis of Cueva's style. Future Bernardo studies will have to take this work into consideration."Anthony J. Crdenas,

TEXTUAL HISTORY AND THE "DIVINE COMEDY"

John Guzzardo

This book examines the

Commedia as a text, set in a discursive space, which can only be interpreted in terms of the other texts that it absorbs and transforms. It is only in the simultaneous reading of these voices that the voice of the Commedia exists. Texts such as the Bible, the Aeneid, the Metamorphoses, the Thebaid and the Commedia itself, coalesce into a textual "history" which must be examined in retrospect in order to interpret the "events" of the poet's text. Cantos studied include: Inferno XX, Purgatorio XXI, and Inferno

XIII, V, and XXVI.

CIRCLING HOME

Cheryl Brown Rush

Ms. Rushs poetry both enlightens and sustains as it explores the past and anticipates the future. By taking uncompromising risks, she makes startling connections between love and death, loss and victory, and what she accomplishes with her poetry has been compared to what Eugene ONeill did in the theatre: an in-depth exploration and re-evaluation of the much loved myths of the American family and American Dream. As a descendent of the original Mormon pioneers and child of the West, she knows her subject matter intimately. She

questions what values we should choose to propel us safely into the twenty-first century and by peeling away accepted layers of hypocrisy, she captures intense pain and ecstasy with both clarity and passion. LIKE TAXES: MARCHING THROUGH GAUL

David Craig

Preface by Howard McCord

"

Like Taxes, by David Craig, is an impressive book. In an age dominated by the secular and characterized by the pretentious and trivial, we are fortunate to have a book so rooted in authentic experience, and serious concern. Craig is eager for the fullness of the religious experience, but he does not let himself be deceived by the superficially religious. He is a subtle enough theologian to know that God hides in strange places, and reveals Himself as He wills, not as mortals might imagine. The best way to encounter Him is to get on with your lifedriving a cab, talking with friends, eating supperand staying as alert as the hunter is for the deer. These are the hunter's poems."

LUCIAN OF SAMOSATA IN THE TWO HESPERIAS: AN ESSAY IN LITERARY AND

Michael Zappala

This important diachronic study of the life and works of Lucian of Samosata investigates the varied images of the Sophist from Syria from late Antiquity to the seventeenth-century. Using sources in Patristic literature, Byzantine glosses, the Neo-Latin satire of the Quattrocento, the

Vitae Luciani, and Golden Age texts, Zappala demonstrates how the writings of Lucian are fragmented into a series of "authors": the historiographer, the writer of fantasy, the moralist, the atheist, the stylist. The study illustrates the dynamic relationship between a fixed text and the cultural translation which "unfixes" that text and spins it out onto surprising, paradoxical recreations. Both in its sources and its treatment, this work is a groundbreaking study which illuminates previously unstudied areas of the continuing mutation of Classical literature in the European heritage. "El estudio de Michael O. Zappala viene a llenar un vaco en la historia de las relaciones culturales entre la tradicin griega, la italiana renacentista y la espaola."Victoriana Roncero Lpez, Cuadernos de ALDEEU.

"Thurston-Griswolds book on Juan Valera lends fresh credence to traditionalist art and criticism of Spains early modern period, while it also depicts Valera as a modern esthetician. In contradiction to the critics who see discrepancies between Valeras critical preaching and his novelistic practice, Thurston-Griswold argues a tight linkage between the two. LAYING WAYS

Mechthild Cranston

Preface by Germaine Bre

"A familiar imageryfree of conscious symbolismis woven into the fabric of these texts: beaches, shells, ships, tides keenly observed; the play of light as day passes into night, or from night to day; as winter moues toward spring and spring to summer and autumn. Places like Key West, or Prousts fictional Combray, appear side by side: motifs, among others, in a tapestry peopled with human figures encountered along the way of the we, the elusive lovers who, wiser than Dantes Paolo and Francesca, will read on and on. Love is at the center of the poet's itinerary. One feels the presence of a keen and unflinching eye within the text, and withal an I gentle and compassionate in a deeply humane way.

Laying Ways is an appealing and charming book with which it is, I feel, an honor and a pleasure to be associated."

Magda Graniela-Rodrguez

This text discusses the essential features of the contemporary Mexican novel as presented by semioticians, hermeneutists, phenomenologists, rhetoricians, sociologists, psychologists, as well as deconstructionists. Furthermore, the book contributes to the understanding of Mexican and Spanish-American Literature by reinterpreting its evolution from the reader's role perspective. This volume proposes the concepts of "The Novel of the Reader," which allows the critic to argue that the restructuring of the relationship author-text-reader is one of the basic traits of Latin American literary expression during the sixties. This work examines the cultural discourses of authority and experience (in their historical, religious, and literary aspects) that emerge in the Spanish Golden Age as a result of the new world order of an expanded Christendom, the Catholic Counter-Reformation, and an evolving Christian humanism. The opening and closing chapters develop a critical model based on dialogical interpretations of ideology, typology, and narratology, which is then related to Spanish Golden Age culture and discourse. The eight main chapters treat a representative selection of travels, meditations, devotional lyrics, novels, stories, prologues, philosophical dramas, and allegorical plays by such major authors as Columbus, Santa Teresa de Jess, Lope de Vega, Cervantes, Quevedo, Caldern, and sor Juana Ins de la Cruz.

IMPERIAL HISTORIES FROM ALFONSO X TO INCA GARCILASO: REVISIONIST MYTHS OF RECONQUEST AND CONQUEST

Roberto Gonzlez-Casanovas

This study situates medieval, renaissance, and colonial Spanish chronicles about the Reconquest of Iberia and Conquest of America in comparative cultural contexts of Iberian expansion. The books purpose is not to survey or compare the chronicles themselves in terms of discrete traditions, contents, or forms, but rather to construct a critical model of national-imperial historiography as a discourse of cultural authority and reception. These issues are examined in relation to the authorial-editorial frames in works from Alfonso X of Castile and James I of Aragon to Columbus, Corts, Cabeza de Vaca, Las Casas, Daz del Castillo, and Inca Garcilaso; they are accompanied by parallel readings of Portuguese, French, and Italian works by Barcelos, Joinville, Compagni, and Cames.

Antagona tetralogyRecuento (1973), Los verdes de mayo hasta el mar (1976), La clera de Aquiles (1979), and Teora del conocimiento (1981)examines the means by which these works of fiction, despite their structurally and linguistically complex discourse, seek to make themselves intelligible to the traditional reader. This reader-response approach to Antagona demonstrates how the work, notwithstanding its efforts to elaborate an innovative prose that would supersede the tenets of (neo)realism that characterized Spanish fiction from the 1940s to the 1960s, reaches out to the traditional reader and ultimately affirms the power of language and literature as vehicles for understanding oneself and the world

Oralia Preble-Niemi

36

This collection of essays investigates a new and relevant phenomenon in the writings of Central American women writers of the 20th Century: the uninhibited approach to the theme of eroticism. The sixteen scholars included in the work examine the presence of the topic in this literature and the manner in which it serves to construct the feminine subject. Several of the articles discuss the revolutionary nature of eroticism in womens literature. This revolution is analyzed in the altered nature of fictional, personal relationships and domestic settings, as well as in the political realm. The articles bring different critical approaches to bear on the works of authors such as Gloconda Belli, Jacinta Escudos, Gloria Guardia, Ana Istar, Luz Mndez de la Vega, Michele Najlis, etc. "Este trabajo es, sin lugar a dudas, imprescindible para los que se interesan en el tema, y fuente obligada de referencia para los que quieran estudiar a fondo la produccin potica de las mujeres centroamericanas."

EL DISCURSO DE LOS PRLOGOS DEL SIGLO DE ORO: LA RETRICA DE LA REPRESENTACIN

Diana Alvarez-Amell. Preface by Antonio Cao

This study is a timely rereading of the prologues of three influential Golden Age Spanish novels:

Lazarillo de Tormes, Guzmn de Alfarache, and Don Quijote.

By addressing the literary issues raised in these very distinct and different prologues, this study places them within a literary tradition while analyzing how these topoi are transformed when deployed in the formation of a new literary form. The study is divided into four parts, while the introduction analyzes how different theoretical schools of the last decades have grappled with the problem of explaining how literary significance is actually achieved, taking into account the complex dynamic set off in the interrelationship among the author, the text, and the reader. nor only communicates a worldview of metamorphosis and mutability, of material and spiritual transformation, but also promotes a code of personal conduct that is grounded in the pastoral values of modesty and humility.

THE MYTH OF REHABILITATION

Paul A. Jones

While working with prison systems, work release programs, mental hospitals, and alternative settings in the public schools, it has become clear to this author that the almost universally accepted idea of rehabilitating criminal offenders is basically falsea myth. The author argues that we need to stop wasting time and money on current forms of rehabilitating criminals and adopt less-traditional methods.

145. LOMBRE DE LA COUPURE: A STUDY OF THE SHADOW METAPHOR IN HENRI BOSCOS TEXTS

Mylne J. Catel

Stories of lost shadows culminate in Romantic Europe with Chamissos

Peter Schlemihl linking them to the Faustian tradition and triggering a renewed interest in the already popular theme. Imitations and sophistications of Peters strange adventure are to be found in numerous shadow authors, including Andersen, Poe, Gilson, and, more recently, Henri Bosco. Catels study is anchored in the context of the renewal of signs through shadow reflections.

Redirecting traditional Jungian shadow interpretations, Catel departs from a feminist perspective in order to connect shadow tales to the traditional patriarchal myths and more particularly the androgyne archetype.

146. LA CONCLUSIN DEL AMADS DE GAULA: LAS SERGAS DE ESPLANDIN DE GARCI RODRGUEZ DE MONTALVO

Eloy R. Gonzlez Argelles

The

Amads de Gaula, the most important of all Spanish chivalric texts, has been known to readers through the recasting of Garci Rodrguez de Montalvo, who also penned his own (for the most part) conclusion to the work, the Sergas de Esplandin. While the intentions of the original Amads may have been quite different from those of Montalvo, he adopted and adapted it as part of an overall plan. In this study Gonzlez takes side with those scholars who have argued that both works must be read as part of the same roman fleuve in order to ascertain what this plan was. The author probes deeply into Montalvos efforts to sustain the interest of his reader while adhering to the narrative model of the Amads. Gonzlezs analysis of the Sergas leads him to a thorough examination of its literary techniques, plot construction, the moralizing interspersed throughout the text, and the functions of main and secondary characters, including the auctor,

Montalvos fictional alter-ego.

147. WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST: SPANISH WOMEN WRITERS AND THE FAIRY TALE TRADITION

Mara Elena Solio

Although the three authors studied, Ana Mara Matute, Carmen Martn Gaite, and Esther Tusquets, are sophisticated intellectuals, they have chosen fairy tales and texts from other marginalized genres originally for female consumption (such as the

novela rosa and the Hollywood womens picture) as the major intertexts in their novels for adults as well as in their fictions for children. Against the backdrop feminist theory and recent critical studies of fairy tales and childrens literature, Solio studies the works of these authors as "gendered texts." Solios book opens with a chapter that traces the historical development of the fairy tale genre, examines their didactic intent, and critiques the images of women in fairy tales. The second chapter explores the manners by which fairy tales were used as a tool for indoctrination during the formative years of the three authors under consideration. These introductory chapters are followed by individual chapters devoted to Martn Gaite, Matute,

38

and Tusquets in which Solio explores the connections between the literature these authors published for children and the novels they penned for an adult readership.

148. MYTH AND MEANING: A PARADIGMATIC ANALYSIS OF GALDSS FORTUNATA Y JACINTA

Edith Moss Jackson

This work is a symbolic study of Benito Prez Galdss masterful novel,

Fortunata y Jacinta (1887). It is the first book to apply the totalizing body of Claude Lvi-Strausss anthropological structuralism to analyze the fictive model society encoded in this novel. Jackson discovers that the results of narrative techniques in Fortunata y Jacinta

reflect the implied authors theoretical move from a mimetic mirroring of society to the presentation of an image of life that is consistent with Galdss critiques of the excessive formalism of the external society of 19th-century Madrid.

149. TONES/COUNTERTONES: A BILINGUAL EDITION: ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS, ADAPTATIONS, IMITATIONS AND TRANSFORMATIONS OF SHORT POETIC TEXTS FROM THE LATIN, FRENCH, SPANISH, AND GERMAN

Philip Cranston

Tones/Countertones proposes formal verse translations of a large selection of well-known (and less well-known) poetry, drawn from ten centuries and five languages: Latin, Italian, French, Spanish, and German. Included are short poems and excerpts from long poems by, among others, Vergil, Horace, Dante, Petrarch, Gil Vicente, Marot, Du Bellay, Ronsard, La Fontaine, Voltaire, Goethe, Foscolo, Leopardi, Musset, Baudelaire, Bcquer, Mallarm, Rimbaud, Rilke, Apollinaire, Supervielle, and Char. A thirteen-page introduction lays out, in some detail, the translators methods and procedures, referring specifically to texts found in this volume and arguing that (despite reservations or even strong objections by critics and poets like Yves Bonnefoy) a poems form is as essential as its content and is, in fact, essential to its content. In an "Afterword," Roger Asselineau, a published poet and professor emeritus of the Sorbonne, writes: "Tones/Countertones, offering a broad sampling of Western literatures of diverse periods, is . . . in every respect remarkable: at once translation and poetry."

150. THE MAGIC ZONE: SKETCHES OF THE NOBEL LAUREATES

Ralph Gunther

The present volume introduces the reader to a wide range of information about the men and women who have won Nobel Prizes. Excerpts from their life histories, from their achievements in the sciences and the arts, are interspersed with an array of anecdotes and chance occurrences which make for highly entertaining reading. The national anthems of three countries are the creations of Nobel laureates. While in office, the presidents of six countries were awarded Nobel prizes. It will attract attention that among the Nobel laureates one can find astronomers, aircraft pilots, performers of music, philosophers, revolutionaries, inventors, art collectors, mountaineers; not to mention the occasional gold digger, terrorist, lumberjack, fruit picker, and explorer of unchartered territories. It was a Nobel laureate who first addressed Mohandas Gandhi as "Mahatma" (Great Soul), anticipating the role that the future leader of the passive resistance movement would play on the Indian subcontinent. It was a Nobel laureate who identified and isolated the chemical species in coffee; that is to say, the species that give coffee its flavor and aroma. Between 1901 and 2002, more than seven hundred people were awarded Nobel Prizes. Covering a time span of 102 years, the book contains more than two hundred well-researched sketches and the notion that if history is the essence of many biographies, the biographies of the Nobel laureates along can throw a prominent light on the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first.

PROTOFEMINISMO, EROTISMO Y COMIDA EN "LA LOZANA ANDALUZA"

Linnette Fourquet-Reed

Prlogo de Luigi Imperiale

With a grounding in the current theoretical understanding of Renaissance feminism, this work presents an examination of Francisco Delicados profeminist position in the context of what are currently described as individualist and relational models. The individualist model proposes an autonomy of women in relation to men, law and politics, while the relational explores what women are and do in contrast to men. Delicados text offers the possibility of invoking both models simultaneously.

LA EXPERIENCIA POTICA Y LA EXPERIENCIA MSTICA EN LA POESA

DE SAN JUAN DE LA CRUZ

Carlos M. Andrs Gil

Using the theory of orality, this book shows how the poems were composed with the techniques of oral tradition; and the oral character of this poetry helps in establishing the uniqueness of the experience induced by the poems. This book is an original and yet attentive reading of the poetic texts using an interdisciplinary approach (philosophical, philological and literary). It represents a major contribution to the study of the poetry of John of the Cross: shattering, and yet rigorous and faithful to the text.

DESENGAO AND SALVATION IN "GUZMN DE ALFARACHE"

Charmaine McMahon

In Spains monumental novel of roguery, Guzmn de Alfarache, the interaction of the moral digressions and the picaresque exploits is presented as a literary technique that reflects the socio-ethical polemic undermining seventeenth century Spanish society. The psychological role of the narrator-protagonist is explored in the interpretation of socio-cultural symbols and myths leading up to Spains unhappy "enlightenment". The picaros confession is presented as secular, rather than religious, and is associated with his journey to make sense out of the world. This defines the motives and effects of baroque "desengao" in the "Guzmn" in order to facilitate a more complete understanding of its moral-didactic aim.

EL DIAGNSTICO DE LA HUMANIDAD POR MATEO ALEMN :

EL DISCURSO MDICO DEL

GUZMN DE ALFARACHE

Francisco Ramrez Santacruz

Prlogo de Francisco Mrquez Villanueva

This book examines how medical language provided Alemn with an extraordinary linguistic tool that made the emergence of the modern novel possible. Mateo Alemn disclosed to subsequent generations of writers, and in particular to Cervantes, the possibilities of novelistic medical discourse in the area of psychology, politics, and even religion. Through recourse to the medico-philosophical tradition of Juan Luis Vives and Huarte de San Juan, Alemn fictionalizes the intricate relationship between the soul and the body, consolidating, before the creation of don Quijote, the mental illness of a literary character as the driving force of the modern novel, and offering by extension a medical allegory of a sick society.

THE WRITER IN THE LANDSCAPE: AUTHORIAL SELF-REPRESENTATION

AND LITERARY FORM IN THE LANDSCAPE WRITINGS OF "UNAMUNO" AND

"AZORN"

Mary Ruth Strzeszewski

The figure of the intellectual emerged in Spain in the second half of the nineteenth century, and Azorn (Jos Martnez Ruiz) and Miguel de Unamuno explored the critical and creative possibilities of this new role in their writings

.

This comparative study of these authors prose writings on landscape focuses on the literary personae of the artist-intellectual that both Azorn and Unamuno cultivated and on their innovative use of the article form. The principal body of the study is dedicated to each authors extension of the narrative of literary self-creation beyond the boundaries of the novel in the flexible, literary form of the article, Strzeszewskis reading of these sui generis writings should contribute to a greater appreciation of their innovative character.

159. PICCOLOMINI EN IBERIA -- INFLUENCIAS ITALIANAS EN EL GNESIS DE LA LITERATURA SENTIMENTAL ESPAOLA

Jaime Leaos

This volume offers a distinct interpretation of the genesis of one of the most fascinating genres of Spanish medieval literature, the fifteenth-century Spanish sentimental novel. This work examines the seminal importance of Historia de duobus amantibus, a work by Eneas Silvio Piccolomini, later known as Pope Pius II, in the development of the novel genre in Spain which originates with the acclaimed piece by Juan Rodrguez del Padrn: Siervo libre de amor.

By comparing seven of the main sentimental novels to the Historia de duobus amantibus, Leaos provides scholars with ample schorlarship on the subject. His innovative efforts also outline the main events of the fifteenth-century, which helped to pave the road to disseminate the genre. Leaoss work is extensive and his lucid study will benefit scholars and graduate students interested in Piccolomini and the history of the sentimental novel.

160. LA POESA CREACIONISTA DE GERARDO DIEGO

Samuel M. Porrata

In purporting a wider and more encompassing view of Creacionismo, Porrata convinces the reader that this literary movement, while maintaining its artistic integrity, also allowed for the personalized and varying poetic styles of Gerardo Diego. The originality of the present work lies in Porratas perceptive study of Gerardo Diegos religiosity which allows the poet to conceive of his poetry as a continuation of Gods creative act through literary expression. This study "represents a significant contribution to literary criticism and theory because it approaches, in a methodical, objective and balanced manner, the hotly debated issues regarding Creacionismos radical and revolutionary independence from all previous artistic form and technique," Salvatore Poeta, scholar and literary critic. Useful reference volume for undergraduate and graduate students as well as research scholars of contemporary Spanish literature.
